Addressing spill control as part of USP compliance

On Dec. 1, most pharmacies (especially compounding pharmacies) will need to be in compliance with USP <800>, Hazardous Drugs – Handling in Healthcare Settings. US Pharmacopeia, which originated the standard, is not involved with its enforcement; that devolves to other federal and state organizations. And while it was written by a compounding expert committee within USP, its recommendations apply to many healthcare settings where exposure to hazardous drugs is a possibility.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, to cite one such federal agency, has been publishing a NIOSH List of Antineoplastic and Other Hazardous Drugs in Healthcare Settings since 2004; the 2016 compilation runs 34 pages of drugs grouped in three categories, representing risks of antineoplastic exposure, reproductive harm or other potential harm to human health.
