Contract logistics provider will have 30 facilities by the end of this year
DHL Supply Chain, the contract logistics part of Deutsche Post DHL Group, will add nine new warehouses and invest in new technology in its network of supply and service centers for pharma and med device customers. Overall capacity is expected to increase from 8 million sq. ft. to 9 million by the end of this year. New sites are located in California and Virginia; campuses in Memphis and South Central, PA, will be expanded, and other investments are occurring in Indianapolis and Raleigh, NC. The company currently provides contract logistics, packaging and managed transportation.
Technology investments include upgraded automated materials handling, vision systems and robot-assisted pick&place. The facilities are temperature-controlled (as per FDA standards) and include vaults, 2-8°C and frozen storage space.
Life sciences was identified by DHL Group several years ago as a strategic direction for the company, notes Scott Cubbler, president of Life Sciences & Healthcare at DHL Supply Chain. “The life sciences market is very dynamic,” he says, “and we want to be flexible enough to help our customers develop their logistics solutions in any direction, with the ultimate goal of getting to the patient as quickly and reliably as possible.”
